Who Needs This Product

Roofing crews, steel erectors, and general contractors use a temporary rope horizontal lifeline to give two or more workers continuous tie-off across a span without repositioning single-point anchors. Rope systems are the light, fast option for wood and membrane roofs, concrete decks, and short-duration jobs where the system moves daily. Each worker still needs a full-body harness and an energy-absorbing connector to ride the line.

The lifeline is the anchorage, not the system. Each worker still needs a full-body harness and an energy-absorbing connector, and a horizontal lifeline deflects during fall arrest. Add the deflection from the manual to your fall clearance calculation, and install under a qualified person per OSHA 1926.502(d)(8).

Compliance Standards

OSHA 1926.502

OSHA 1926.502(d)(8)

Horizontal lifelines must be designed, installed, and used under the supervision of a qualified person, as part of a complete personal fall arrest system.

Typical Applications

Residential roofingContinuous tie-off across trusses and ridge lines.
Commercial roofingMembrane, coating, and sheet metal work on low-slope roofs.
Concrete decksTie-off during forming, pouring, and finishing.
Steel erectionTemporary spans between erected columns.
Short-duration jobsSystems that set up and tear down daily.
Multi-trade sitesShared tie-off for framing, mechanical, and roofing crews.

How to Use

Follow the FallTech instruction manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Select the anchors. Choose two end anchorage points that meet the strength requirements in the FallTech manual for the number of users.
  2. Rig the span. Wrap the pass-through sling anchors, connect the rope, and route it clear of edges and obstructions.
  3. Tension the line. Use the integrated line tensioner to remove slack per the manual.
  4. Connect the workers. Each worker ties off to a connecting ring with an energy-absorbing lanyard or SRL after verifying fall clearance including line deflection.
  5. Move it as work progresses. Tear down and re-rig in minutes when the crew shifts to the next span.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect the complete system before each use. A competent person must perform a documented inspection at least every six months under ANSI Z359.2 practice.

  • Rope: cuts, fraying, burns, chemical damage, glazing, and flat spots.
  • Energy absorber: no deployment, tearing, or activation evidence.
  • Tensioner and rings: no cracks, deformation, or corrosion; smooth operation.
  • Sling anchors: webbing free of cuts, burns, and UV damage; D-rings undamaged.
  • Carabiners: gates close and lock fully under spring tension.

Retirement triggers: any fall event on the system, energy absorber deployment, rope or hardware damage, or any condition the inspector cannot verify as safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many workers can tie off to this system?
The system is rated for a maximum of 2 workers at 310 lb each, including clothing and tools. Each worker connects to a connecting ring with an energy-absorbing lanyard or SRL.
Is this a complete fall arrest system?
No. A horizontal lifeline is the anchorage portion only. Each worker also needs a full-body harness and a compatible energy-absorbing connector, plus end anchor points that meet the strength requirements in the FallTech manual.
What anchors does the system connect to?
The kit includes two polyester web pass-through sling anchors rated at 5,000 lb minimum. Wrap them around structural members that meet the manual's strength requirements for the number of users.
How much clearance do I need below the work surface?
A horizontal lifeline deflects during fall arrest, and the longer the span, the more it sags. Add the system deflection from the manual to your connector's free fall and deceleration distance when you calculate fall clearance. Our free Fall Protection Calculator on this page runs the math.
What is the rope made of?
The 2-person kernmantle kit runs 11/16 in braided 32-strand solid-core nylon, the 770001 runs 5/8 in low-stretch hollow-core polyester, and the 4-person system runs 5/8 in double-braid polyester at 6,000 lb minimum static strength.
How does the energy absorber work?
A polyester tear-away absorber is integrated at the tensioner. During a fall arrest it deploys progressively, limiting the loads transmitted to the end anchors and the workers on the line.
Does this meet OSHA requirements?
Yes. The system meets OSHA 1926.502 requirements when installed under the supervision of a qualified person per 1926.502(d)(8), with anchorages and clearances per the FallTech manual.
