RGSS58 Self-Tracking Rope Grab for 5/8 in Lifeline, 2-Pack

The Frontline RGSS58 is a moving rope grab for flexible anchorage lines: it tracks along with you as you climb up or down the lifeline, and locks instantly if a fall starts. The openable design installs mid-line in seconds - no threading from the rope end.

Machined from high strength alloy steel with a golden yellow galvanized finish, it runs on 5/8 in twisted rope or 15/32 in kernmantle, carries a 3,372 lb minimum breaking strength, and weighs 1.22 lbs. A unique anti-panic feature keeps the cam engaging even if the worker grabs the device in a fall. ANSI Z359.1-2007 and CSA Z259.2.5-12.

Who Needs This Product

This product is the connector between a worker and a vertical lifeline. Roofers, tower crews, and anyone climbing on a rope lifeline pair a rope grab with their harness and lifeline so the protection follows them hands-free. You still need the lifeline, a rated anchor, and a full body harness to complete the system.

Features

Self-tracking

Follows you up and down the lifeline without manual repositioning.

Anti-panic feature

Locks even if instinct makes you grab the device during a fall.

Openable body

Installs and removes mid-line - no feeding from the rope end.

Two rope sizes

5/8 in twisted rope or 15/32 in kernmantle.

Alloy steel build

Golden yellow galvanized for corrosion protection.

1.22 lbs

Light enough to forget it is on the line.

Match the grab to the rope. The RGSS58 is rated for 5/8 in twisted rope and 15/32 in kernmantle - the wrong rope diameter defeats the cam. Connect to the harness per the manual (short connection, dorsal D-ring) and verify the grab locks with a sharp downward snap before every climb.

Compliance Standards

ANSI Z359.1-2007

American National Standard safety requirements for personal fall arrest systems. Third-party test report linked in Submittals.

CSA Z259.2.5-12

Canadian standard for fall arresters and vertical lifelines.

OSHA 29 CFR 1926 / 1910

Federal construction and general industry fall protection criteria.

How to Install the RGSS58

Follow the manufacturer's manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Inspect. Check body, cam, closure, and eye before each use.
  2. Open and mount. Open the body and seat it on the lifeline with the UP arrow toward the anchor.
  3. Close and secure. Re-secure the closure per the manual.
  4. Connect. Attach your harness connection to the eye per the manual.
  5. Function test. Snap the grab sharply down the rope - it must lock instantly.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before each use, with a documented competent-person inspection at least every 6 months. Pull the equipment from service for any of the conditions below.

  • Body and cam: deformation, cracks, corrosion, or worn teeth.
  • Locking screw / closure: opens and re-secures positively (openable models).
  • Anti-panic and locking function: grabs must lock on the rope when snapped downward.
  • Connecting eye: wear, elongation, or cracks.
  • Markings: labels must be present and legible.

Retire the equipment immediately after any fall arrest event or if any inspection point fails. Destroy retired equipment so it cannot return to service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What rope does it fit?
5/8 in twisted rope or 15/32 in kernmantle rope, per the spec sheet.
What does anti-panic mean?
If a falling worker instinctively grabs the device, an anti-panic mechanism keeps the cam driving into the rope instead of being held open.
Can I install it mid-line?
Yes - the openable body mounts anywhere on the lifeline without threading from an end.
Does it need a lanyard?
Connect per the Frontline manual; the RGSS58ES version ships with an integrated 3 ft shock-pack lanyard if you want it built in.
What is the strength rating?
3,372 lbs minimum breaking strength per the spec sheet.
Has it been independently tested?
Yes - the test report is linked in Submittals.
What is the difference between fall arrest and fall restraint?
Fall arrest catches a worker after a fall happens; fall restraint prevents the worker from reaching the fall hazard in the first place. For a deeper walkthrough with system examples, read our guide: Fall Arrest vs. Fall Restraint. Use the Fall Protection Calculator below to size the right system for your job.
