1017C Floor Joist Safety Bar

The Super Anchor 1017C is the floor joist safety bar for 12, 16, and 24 inch on center framing with one adjustable bar: a safety green powder coated 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 1/8 inch A-36 steel cross-bar with 2 x 3/16 inch attachment stems, a 3/16 inch bump bar, and 3/8 inch stainless detent locking pins rated at 18,000 lb on coated cable tethers. It drops over 4x2 open web floor joists and roof trusses and locks in seconds.

2-person fall arrest capacity per bar with fall indicator attachment points and top chord centering holes for anti-skid nailing. Legs center on 1-3/4 inch OC hole patterns for a precise fit on the chords. Built to the same cross-bracing, framing strength, and inspection rules as the Super Anchor Safety Bar system under ANSI Z359.1 and OSHA 1926.502.

Who Needs This Product

Floor joist bars protect framing crews decking floor systems: the most common serious falls in residential framing happen through open web joists before subfloor goes down. The 1017C fits 12, 16, and 24 inch on center framing with one adjustable bar. Two workers attach per bar with personal energy absorbers or SRLs, framing must be braced and capable of 5,000 lb or 2 times the load, and bars move ahead of the deck as sheathing advances. Not for work positioning.

Features

Locks to open web joists

Drop over the top chords and set the 18,000 lb stainless detent pins; remove and move in seconds.

12-16-24 inch adjustable leg spacing

Leg G adjusts between 12, 16, and 24 inch OC positions, one bar for every layout.

Bump bar protection

The 3/16 inch bump bar keeps the cross-bar from rolling under load and protects the chord edge.

Fall indicator points

Dedicated attachment points show when the bar has taken a load and needs inspection.

Replaceable wear parts

Detent pins and cable tethers replace in the field, keeping bars in service for years.

Anti-skid centering holes

Top chord centering holes at 1-3/4 inch OC take duplex nails when the bar sits above bracing.

Installation Overview

Full figures, model tables, and bracing rules are in the manual linked below. The basics:

  1. Confirm joists are braced per the truss manufacturer or project engineer and capable of 5,000 lb or 2 times the intended load.
  2. Set the bar across the joist top chords and adjust leg G to the joist spacing with cross-bracing or strongbacks in place below.
  3. Seat all detent locking pins and confirm before tie-off.
  4. Pin the legs with duplex nails through the centering holes when the bar sits above bracing or sheathing.
  5. Connect up to 2 workers with personal energy absorbers or SRLs and compliant connectors.
  6. Move the bar ahead of the deck as sheathing advances, never loading it opposite the work direction.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before installation and each use, with documented annual inspections. Remove the anchor from service when any of the following apply:

  • The cross-bar, stem, or legs are bent or deformed.
  • Detent pins are missing, damaged, or replaced with uncertified hardware.
  • Tethers or mounting hardware are broken.
  • The bar was subjected to a fall; remove it from service and inspect the framing.
  • The PID or warning label is missing or illegible.

Tag anchors removed from service to prevent further use until inspected by a qualified or competent person.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which joist spacing does the 1017C fit?
The adjustable leg G covers 12, 16, and 24 inch OC layouts, so one bar handles every floor system on the job. Confirm each component in the system is compatible and rated for the intended use before connecting to it. Store it in a clean, dry place away from heat and chemicals to help preserve its condition between uses.
How many workers per bar?
Two workers in fall arrest per bar, each at up to 310 lb including tools and equipment, with personal energy absorbers or SRLs. Confirm each component in the system is compatible and rated for the intended use before connecting to it. For complete protection, pair it with a compatible full body harness, connector, and shock absorbing lanyard or self retracting lifeline.
What are the detent pins rated for?
The 3/8 inch stainless detent locking pins carry an 18,000 lb strength rating, ride coated cable tethers, and are field replaceable along with the tethers. Never modify or repair the product in the field, since altering it can compromise its ability to arrest a fall.
What is the bump bar for?
The 3/16 inch bump bar stops the cross-bar from rotating under load and protects the joist chord edge during arrest. The specifications listed on this page outline the build details you need for your application. For complete protection, pair it with a compatible full body harness, connector, and shock absorbing lanyard or self retracting lifeline.
What are fall indicator attachment points?
Dedicated tie-off points that visibly deform when the bar takes fall forces, flagging the bar for inspection and the framing below for checking. Verify that the mounting surface is sound and that every fastener is fully seated before the anchor is put into service. Store it in a clean, dry place away from heat and chemicals to help preserve its condition between uses.
Do I need cross-bracing on floor joists too?
Yes. Bracing or strongbacks below the bar position transfer arrest forces across the floor system, and legs pin with duplex nails when the bar sits above the bracing plane. Verify that the mounting surface is sound and that every fastener is fully seated before the anchor is put into service.
Which model should I buy?
Match your layout: 1017A for 24 inch OC, 1017B for 16 inch OC, or 1017C when your jobs mix spacings and you want one adjustable bar that covers 12, 16, and 24 inch OC. Make sure the connecting hardware and anchorage suit your application before you attach a lanyard or lifeline.
