GLC38 Openable Cable Glider for Securope Ladder Systems

The GLC38 is the climber's connection to a Securope vertical cable lifeline. It opens to insert or remove at any point on the 5/16 inch cable - no climbing down to disconnect - then follows the climber smoothly up and down, overpassing every intermediate anchor without a hand ever leaving the ladder. The instant a fall starts, it locks.

Duplex stainless steel with an integrated energy absorber, a swivelling connector that keeps the high-strength ANSI-rated carabiner well-oriented, and a 110 to 330 lb user capacity. Minimum breaking strength 3,330 lb; connector strength 5,395 lb. Conforms to ANSI A14.3. Built for the Frontline VLCS ladder cable system.

Who Needs This Product

This product is a guided fall arrester - the moving link between a climber's harness and a Securope cable ladder system. The system cable (VLCS, sold separately) is the anchorage; the climber's full body harness is the body support; the GLC38 is the connector that rides with them and does the catching.

Features

Openable design

Insert or remove the glider at any point on the cable - mid-climb access, no bottom-of-ladder ritual.

Integrated energy absorber

Limits arrest forces on the climber when the glider locks.

Instant lock

Inertia-activated locking grabs the cable the moment a fall begins.

Swivelling connector

The carabiner stays well-oriented at the sternal D-ring while the climber moves.

Hands-free anchor overpass

Glides past every intermediate cable guide without unclipping.

Duplex stainless steel

Corrosion resistance matched to the stainless Securope cable it rides.

One glider, one system. The GLC38 is rated for Frontline 5/16 inch Securope cable systems only - never use it on rope, rail, or other cable sizes. One climber per glider, 110 to 330 lbs including tools, connected to the harness sternal D-ring.

Compliance Standards

ANSI A14.3

American National Standard for fixed ladder safety systems.

Integrated energy absorption

Limits arrest forces per guided fall arrester practice.

EN-pedigree design

Securope gliders are engineered to European guided-fall-arrester practice (EN 353-1).

System certified

Tested as part of the certified VLCS Securope system.

Use Overview

Follow the manufacturer's manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Inspect. Check the body, gate, absorber indicator, swivel, and carabiner before each climb.
  2. Open and insert. Open the glider and seat it on the 5/16 in cable at any point.
  3. Verify lock. Close the glider, confirm it cannot be removed without deliberate opening, and tug-test the lock.
  4. Connect. Clip the carabiner to the harness frontal (sternal) D-ring.
  5. Climb. The glider follows hands-free, overpassing intermediate anchors.
  6. Exit. At the top or bottom, open and remove the glider only from a safe standing position.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before each use, with a documented competent-person inspection at least every 6 months. Pull the equipment from service for any of the conditions below.

  • Body and gate: deformation, cracks, corrosion, or a gate that does not close positively.
  • Energy absorber: any deployment indication.
  • Swivel and carabiner: smooth rotation, positive gate lock, no wear at the nose.
  • Function: locks instantly when snapped downward on the cable.
  • Markings: legible.

Retirement triggers: any fall arrest on the glider, a deployed energy absorber, deformation or corrosion, or any condition where the inspector cannot verify it is fit for service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the rated user capacity?
One climber from 110 to 330 lb including clothing and tools. Minimum breaking strength is 3,330 lb with a 5,395 lb connector.
Which standards does this product meet?
The GLC38 conforms to ANSI A14.3 for fixed ladder safety systems and is engineered to European guided-fall-arrester practice. It is tested as part of the certified Securope VLCS system.
Which systems does it work with?
Frontline Securope 5/16 inch stainless cable ladder systems (the VLCS line) only. It is not compatible with rope grabs’ rope, rigid rail, or other cable diameters.
Why does the openable design matter?
Crews can join or leave the system at any height - service techs stepping onto a mid-level platform do not have to ride the cable to the bottom to disconnect, and a second climber can insert above the first.
What do I need to pair with this glider to build a complete fall arrest system?
A Securope VLCS cable system installed on the ladder, plus a full body harness with a frontal (sternal) D-ring for each climber. The glider connects the two.
How often should this glider be inspected, and when should it be retired?
Inspect before every climb, with a documented competent-person inspection at least every six months. Retire it immediately after any fall arrest, any absorber deployment, or any condition where it cannot be verified as safe.
What is the difference between fall arrest and fall restraint?
Fall arrest catches a worker after a fall happens; fall restraint prevents the worker from reaching the fall hazard in the first place. The GLC38 is a fall arrest device - it locks on the cable the moment a fall starts. For a deeper walkthrough with system examples, read our guide: Fall Arrest vs. Fall Restraint.
