Safety Guidelines for Standing Seam Roofs

Develop OSHA-Compliant Safety Plans

Before any work begins, ensure a safety plan meets OSHA standards. This plan should include a comprehensive rescue strategy to protect workers in emergencies.

Equip Workers with High-Quality Safety Gear

Provide your team with high-quality full-body harnesses and shock-absorbing lanyards. This gear is essential for reducing the impact of falls and helping to prevent severe injuries.

Use Specialized Roof Anchor Systems

For standing seam roofs, opt for anchors for this roofing type. Follow manufacturer guidelines carefully and avoid systems that require attaching over clips, as these can be difficult to locate on older roofs.

Ensure Proper Ladder and Scaffolding Setup

Make sure ladders and scaffolding are stable and free of obstructions. Workers should be trained in OSHA-approved ladder safety, including the 4-to-1 rule for safe positioning.

Encourage the Use of Trauma Straps

Trauma straps should be part of every worker's harness. Safety training should include the proper use of trauma straps, which are vital in reducing suspension trauma risks after a fall.

Install Permanent Roof Anchors

Consider installing permanent roof anchor systems that can remain in place for future maintenance and inspections. These systems provide ongoing safety benefits and help protect workers during long-term projects.

Secure Work Areas with Barriers

Install guardrails, warning lines, or other protective measures to create safe work zones on low-slope roofs. These barriers help prevent falls and establish safer working conditions.

Take Precautions on Curved Roofs

Avoid using seam-mounted anchors on curved metal panels. Instead, consult a safety expert to assess the site and develop a plan that addresses the specific risks associated with curved surfaces.

Promote a Safety-First Culture

Regular equipment inspections and frequent safety training sessions should be a priority. A strong safety culture helps maintain high standards and reduces the risk of workplace accidents.

Wear Non-Slip Footwear

Ensure workers wear non-slip footwear designed for smooth metal roofing surfaces. Avoid working on wet roofs, as proper footwear improves stability and reduces the likelihood of slips and falls.
