Who Is Una-Clad?

Una-Clad, now a premier brand under Elevate (the 2022 rebrand of Firestone Building Products), represents a legacy of excellence in the metal roofing industry. Operating under the Holcim umbrella, Elevate continues to push the boundaries of sustainable, innovative roofing. The Una-Clad standing-seam line remains a favorite among architects and contractors for its exceptional durability, environmental efficiency, and aesthetic versatility.

Elevate manufactures the Una-Clad series of standing-seam panels to meet the most demanding structural requirements. From the wind-resistant, mechanically seamed UC-3 to the ultra-reliable Pittsburgh Locked UC-6, these systems accommodate the most complex architectural visions, including curved and tapered designs. With 21 state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities across North America, Elevate combines global resources with local expertise to deliver world-class metal roofing and building envelope solutions.

Why Are Compatible Fall Protection Products Critical for Una-Clad Panels?

Elevate engineers Una-Clad panels with sophisticated concealed fasteners and weathertight seams to ensure long-term performance. However, these advanced designs require specialized safety hardware. Using traditional, penetrating anchors that drill into the metal compromises the roof's structural integrity, creates leak points, and voids manufacturer warranties. Drilling or puncturing a weather-tight panel risks leaks, restricts thermal movement, and typically voids the Elevate 30-Year Platinum Warranty. To ensure a 100 percent tie-off without compromising the build, we recommend the modular SSRA system.

The following products provide a complete safety solution for Una-Clad profiles:

  • SSRA1 Seam Anchor: The foundational component. This patented, universal-fit anchor fits approximately 95% of today's standing-seam profiles, providing a certified 5,000-lb tie-off for non-curved 22-gauge and 24-gauge steel panels.
  • SSRA2 Adjustable Roof Jack Adapters: Mount directly to the anchors to hold 10-foot wooden walk-boards, providing stable footing on steep slopes.
  • SSRA3 Anchor Plates: High-strength spanner plates that connect two SSRA1 anchors into a single assembly to serve as structural endpoints for horizontal lifelines.
  • 100-foot SSRA Horizontal Lifeline Kit: Allows two workers to move the entire length of the roof field while remaining 100 percent tied off on short-term projects.
  • 120-foot Super Anchor Permanent HLL: A reliable maintenance solution using non-penetrating 5-inch riser posts that protect the roof's weather-tight seal.
  • Ridge Pro Steep Assist: The essential First-Man-Up tool for pitches between 6:12 and 12:12, providing immediate tie-off before the worker leaves the ladder.

Keep in mind that OSHA and ANSI standards limit horizontal lifeline systems to a maximum pitch of 4:12. OSHA recognizes that workers can lose their footing and slide on steeper roofs, leading to dangerous falls, which is not suitable for horizontal lifeline setups.

Proper Attachment: Set-Screws and Torque Requirements

The holding power of your anchor depends on the proper application of the fastener based on the material gauge of your Una-Clad panels:

  • Cupped-Tip Stainless Steel Set Screws: Use these exclusively on 22-gauge steel panels and torque to 90 inch-pounds using a calibrated torque wrench.
  • Nylon-Tipped Set Screws: Apply these to 22- or 24-gauge steel panels to achieve certified holding power. Torque these to 180-200 inch-pounds.
  • Maintenance: Treat nylon tips as consumables. Replace these tips every 3 to 5 uses to maintain maximum grip strength and ensure compliance with safety standards.

CRITICAL WARNING: NO IMPACT GUNS

Warning: Always use a calibrated torque wrench for final installation. Never use an impact gun to install set-screws. Impact guns can quickly over-tighten the screws, resulting in permanent damage to the standing-seam panel or the anchor itself. This error compromises the anchor's certified holding power and voids the hardware warranty.

American Engineering vs. Cheap Import Risk: The Gamble of Generic Hardware

An Elevate Una-Clad system represents the pinnacle of global structural engineering. Your fall protection strategy should match the architectural precision required to earn an Elevate 30-Year Platinum Warranty. Opting for unverified, generic, or imported anchors is a gamble with your professional reputation and your firm's liability shield. Secondary-market "look-alike" hardware often bypasses the serialized laboratory validation required to meet OSHA 1926.502 and ANSI standards.

Allowing unbranded fall protection equipment on a job site subject to OSHA inspections can expose the contractor to liability. Secure your legacy with American-engineered SSRA hardware—machined from solid 6061-T6 aluminum and validated by ironclad performance data. Review our independent laboratory test reports to ensure your crew is protected by a certified bond.

Safety Tips For Standing Seam Roofs

  1. Set Up Protective Barriers: Defining safe zones with guardrails or warning lines is essential on expansive Una-Clad roof fields. These barriers prevent edge-related accidents on low-slope commercial structures.
  2. Promote a Safety-First Culture: Proactive safety starts with open crew briefings. Teamwork and regular hazard assessments ensure everyone takes ownership of the secure environment.
  3. Use Specialized Seam Clamps: Protect the building's watertight integrity and Elevate warranty by using only non-penetrating clamps that maintain the "floating" nature of the panels.
  4. Equip Personnel with Trauma Relief Straps: Suspension trauma can become life-threatening in minutes. Every harness should be equipped with relief straps that allow a fallen worker to "stand up" while awaiting rescue.
  5. Mandate High-Traction Footwear: Metal roofs are notoriously slick. Ensure every crew member wears roofing-specific boots designed for metal traction to move safely across UC-3 or UC-6 profiles.
  6. Factor "Dynamic Sag" into Fall Clearance: Account for the physical stretch of horizontal lifelines during a fall incident. Always add a 2-to-3-foot safety margin to your Total Fall Clearance (TFC) calculation.
  7. Deploy Leading Edge (LE) Rated SRLs: Structural standing-seam ribs feature sharp vertical edges that can shear standard ropes. Always equip your workers with LE-rated self-retracting lifelines.
  8. Strictly Adhere to the 4-to-1 Ladder Rule: Ensure all access points are stable. Pull the ladder base out 1 foot for every 4 feet of height to prevent kick-outs during roof transitions.
  9. Install Permanent Systems for Maintenance: For facilities that require regular industrial access, install permanent horizontal lifelines with non-penetrating riser posts and the 120-foot Super Anchor Kit.
  10. CRITICAL WARNING: Concave, convex, curved, or radiused metal panels present unique technical challenges. A mandatory in-person inspection by a trained safety expert is recommended to determine the safest fall protection plan.
