Tie Down Mobile Fall Protection

Tie Down BigFoot Non-Penetrating Mobile Fall Protection Cart for 3 Workers

The BigFoot is a 750 lb ballasted mobile anchor that never penetrates the roof. Roll it into position on its 300 lb flat-free tires, crank the jacking handle to lift the wheels and set the twenty 25 lb ballast plates onto the deck, and the mass of the cart does the holding. There are no spikes, so it is the Tie Down cart for concrete, modified bitumen, built-up roofing, TPO and EPDM including ballasted EPDM.

It protects one worker in fall arrest and two in fall restraint, each up to 310 lb, on slopes up to 1:12 with an 8 ft minimum setback. Four hoist rings, a metal instruction plate with a QR code to the manual, and a standard pallet footprint make it a simple cart to move between jobs.

Who Needs This Product

The BigFoot is for crews on concrete decks and finished membrane roofs where a penetrating cart is not allowed and a permanent anchor is not wanted. Roof maintenance teams, HVAC and solar service crews, and building owners who need an anchor they can roll out for a day of work choose it. One worker ties off in fall arrest, two more in restraint, each with a harness, a connecting device sized to the range of use chart, and a rescue plan.

Features

Non-penetrating by design

Ballast, not spikes, holds the cart. Nothing touches the membrane but the ballast plates, so there is no repair after a fall arrest and no restriction on concrete.

Crank jacking system

Turn the jacking handle to lift the wheels off the deck and lower the ballast plates into contact. Crank the other way and it rolls again.

Twenty 25 lb ballast plates

500 lb of removable plates on a 250 lb frame. Plates come out for the crane pick and go back in on the roof.

Three tie-off points

One fall arrest D-ring low on the cart and two fall restraint D-rings for workers who stay back from the edge.

Range of use chart on the cart

A metal instruction plate shows the setback to range of use table and a QR code opens the manual on a phone.

Drop tested

The BigFoot US model stopped a 310 lb, 6 ft free fall drop test on each approved surface. DoC ETR-60060 is in the submittals.

⚠

Approved surfaces only. Concrete, modified bitumen, built-up roofing, TPO and EPDM including ballasted EPDM, slope 1:12 or less, with the cart at least 8 ft from the leading edge. The BigFoot is not for ISO, EPS, PVC, gypsum, tectum, densdeck or hardboard. Range of use is double the setback, 16 ft at 8 ft up to 30 ft at 15 ft. Confirm fall clearance with the calculator below.

Compliance Standards

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.502

Construction fall protection systems criteria for anchorages and personal fall arrest systems.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.140

Typical Applications

Concrete roof decksParking garages, podiums and plaza decks.
Finished membrane roofsTPO and EPDM where penetration is not allowed.
Mod bit and BURBuilt-up and modified bitumen roofs.
HVAC serviceRooftop unit maintenance with no permanent anchor.
Solar serviceArray inspection and panel swaps.
Building ownersA roll out anchor for in house maintenance.

How to Use

Follow the Tie Down instruction manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Verify the surface. Confirm the roof is concrete, mod bit, BUR, TPO or EPDM, slope 1:12 or less, and the deck carries 750 lb plus the crew.
  2. Hoist and roll. Lift by the four hoist rings (remove ballast plates for the pick if needed), roll the cart at least 8 ft from the edge and square to it.
  3. Set the ballast. Crank the jacking handle until the wheels lift and all twenty plates sit flat on the deck.
  4. Connect. One worker on the fall arrest D-ring, up to two on the restraint D-rings, with connecting devices sized to the range of use chart.
  5. Reposition. Crank the wheels down, roll to the next spot, and reset the ballast before anyone ties off.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before each use, with a documented competent person inspection at least annually. Remove the system from service for any of the conditions below.

  • Ballast plates and frame: missing or cracked plates, bent frame, corrosion.
  • Jacking system: a crank that binds, a jack that will not lift the wheels or will not set the plates flat.
  • Tie-off D-rings and hoist rings: distortion, cracks, corrosion.
  • Tires and axles: damaged tires, bent axles.
  • Instruction plate and labels: illegible or missing.

Remove the system from service immediately after any fall arrest event and have it inspected by a competent person before it returns to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the BigFoot penetrate the roof?
No. It is held by 750 lb of ballast set onto the deck by the crank jacking system. Nothing penetrates the membrane or the concrete, which is why it is approved on concrete and finished roofs where the spiked carts are not.
How many workers can tie off?
Three: one in fall arrest on the low D-ring and two in fall restraint on the upper D-rings, each up to 310 lb including clothing and tools.
What surfaces is it approved for?
Concrete, modified bitumen, built-up roofing, TPO and EPDM including ballasted EPDM, on slopes up to 1:12. It is not approved on ISO, EPS, PVC, gypsum, tectum, densdeck or hardboard. The Squatch covers more surfaces with four workers.
How far from the edge does it go?
At least 8 ft. The range of use is double the setback: 16 ft at 8 ft, 20 ft at 10 ft, up to 30 ft at 15 ft. The chart is on the cart's instruction plate.
How do I get 750 lb onto the roof?
Lift by the four hoist rings with a crane or telehandler. The twenty 25 lb plates are removable, so the frame can go up at 250 lb and the plates in a separate pick if the hoist is limited.
What happens after a fall?
The cart may slide toward the edge as it arrests the fall, which is why the 8 ft setback matters. Rescue the worker per your plan, then remove the cart from service for a competent person inspection before reuse.
Can I finance the BigFoot?
Yes. Business financing through APPROVE takes about 60 seconds to apply and a sample monthly payment is shown above. Call us for delivered freight.
