Three functions in one Patriot housing. Made in USA.

The RAG503W-US is the Patriot platform's 3-Way Retrieval Self-Retracting Lifeline. Three operating modes in one cast aluminum body: SRL fall arrest, mechanical retrieval winch(30:1 advantage), and controlled lowering. 50 ft of 3/16 inch galvanized steel cable, 4,200 lb cable minimum breaking strength, a 130 to 310 lb ANSI Z359.14 Class A capacity range (tested to 350 lb). Bolts to any Frontline Patriot tripod (TAN07-US), quadpod (QAN75-US), future Patriot davit, or MEGApod tripod (TAN07, TAN10). The standalone version of the same SRL bundled inside our live TAN07RA-US Patriot kit, with Buy America, Build America (BABA) sourcing for federal jobs.

One device, one rescue plan, no mid-entry hardware swaps.

Confined space entry teams routinely run into the same problem: a fall-arrest SRL keeps the entrant safe during normal cable travel, but if an incident requires assisted retrieval or controlled lowering, a separate winch has to come off the truck, be bolted to the tripod, and the entrant has to be transferred. The RAG503W-US closes that gap. SRL fall arrest mode for normal entry. Rotate the mode knob one quarter turn and the same device becomes a 30:1 retrieval winch for assisted lifting or controlled lowering. One ANSI Z359.14 Class A-certified box meets the OSHA 1910.146 retrieval requirement without a second piece of hardware in the kit.

Key Features

Dual Independent Brake System. Two stainless steel brake systems work in series: an energy-absorbing centrifugal brake engages above 4.5 ft/sec to initiate fall arrest, and a friction brake provides controlled lowering and load holding. Average arresting force stays below 1,350 lb (6 kN) within the ANSI capacity range.
3/16 in Galvanized Steel Cable. 50 ft (15.2 m) of 3/16 inch (4.8 mm) galvanized steel wire rope. 4,200 lb (1,905 kg) minimum breaking strength. Galvanized for confined-space humidity, vapors, and abrasion against the entry rim.
Rubber-Coated Mode Selection Knob. A single rubber-coated knob switches the device between SRL fall arrest mode and winch retrieval mode in a quarter turn. Tactile feedback works through gloves. The knob locks the selected mode so the device cannot drift between functions during use.
30:1 Mechanical Advantage Winch Mode. When configured for winch mode, the 30:1 mechanical advantage keeps handle force well within the OSHA-allowed range for assisted retrieval. Two handle positions let the operator trade off speed versus force.
Weather-Resistant Cast Aluminum Housing. One-piece weather-resistant cast aluminum housing for corrosion resistance in petrochemical, wastewater, and municipal confined-space environments. Lighter than equivalent steel housings at 45 lb device weight.
Locking Swivel Snaphook with Stress Indicator. The lifeline ends in a locking swivel snaphook with an integrated impact-deployed stress indicator. If the device sees an arrest event or impact load, the visible indicator deploys, signaling that the device must be removed from service for factory inspection.

⚠ Personal Fall Arrest, Retrieval, and Lowering. NOT a Material Handling Device.

The RAG503W-US is rated for use by ONE person at a time. Combined weight of worker, clothing, tools, and equipment must fall within the 130 to 310 lb ANSI Z359.14 Class A range for a maximum arrest distance of less than or equal to 24 in. The device has been tested up to 350 lb; in the 310 to 350 lb range maximum arrest distance increases to less than or equal to 54 in and fall clearance must be planned accordingly. Do not use for general-purpose material lifting independent of a connected worker. Never change between SRL mode and winch mode while a worker is loaded on the cable. Annual factory inspection and recertification is required, and the device must be returned for factory inspection any time it arrests a fall, the stress indicator deploys, the cable shows damage, the locking mechanism malfunctions, or it has not been inspected in the past 12 months.

Federal and Infrastructure ProjectsBuy America projects under BABA where Made in USA fall protection equipment is required, and Buy American Act federal contracts.

Two-Mode Setup Procedure

  1. Plan the entry. Pre-plan the permit-required confined space entry per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146 and 1926.1204 with the entry supervisor, attendant, and entrant. Confirm atmospheric testing, ventilation, communication, and a documented rescue plan are in place before the device leaves the truck.
  2. Mount the device. Attach the RAG503W-US to a Frontline Patriot tripod leg (TAN07-US), Patriot quadpod boom mount block (QAN75-US), Patriot davit (future DAN75), or MEGApod tripod leg (TAN07, TAN10) using the included mounting bracket and locking pins. Route the cable up the support and over the head split sheave pulley so the lifeline hangs centered over the entry opening.
  3. Configure SRL mode for entry. Pull the rubber-coated mode selection knob outward and rotate it counterclockwise one quarter turn. The knob springs outward, indicating SRL fall arrest mode is engaged. Secure the folding winch handle to the mounting bracket in position 1 so the handle is locked out of the way during free cable travel. Confirm the cable pulls and retracts freely.
  4. Connect the entrant. Connect the locking swivel snaphook on the lifeline to the dorsal D-ring of the entrant's full body harness. Verify the snaphook gate and locking sleeve operate normally, and verify the stress indicator window on the snaphook body is clear (not deployed).
  5. Switch to winch mode for retrieval or lowering. When the entry plan calls for assisted lifting or controlled lowering, release the winch handle from the mounting bracket only when the cable is unloaded. Push the mode selection knob inward and rotate it clockwise one quarter turn. The cable now cranks in and out under handle control. Never change modes while a worker is loaded on the cable.
  6. Select handle position for force. Use handle position 1 for greater mechanical advantage with faster cable travel. Use handle position 2 for the highest mechanical advantage with slower, more controlled travel. The 30:1 winch advantage keeps handle force well within the OSHA-allowed range for assisted rescue.

Inspection and Pre-Use Checks

3-Way SRLs see hard cycles, weather, chemical vapors, and abrasion against the rim of the confined space entry. Routine inspection keeps the RAG503W-US field-ready and protects every entrant. Both the spec sheet and the user manual call out pre-use inspection as a required Competent Person task before every entry.

Pre-Use Inspection (Every Use)

Before each entry, confirm the mounting bracket sits flush against the tripod leg, quadpod boom mount, or davit and that both locking pins are fully engaged. Inspect the full length of the galvanized steel cable for fraying, broken strands, kinks, rust spots, or abrasion. Inspect the cast aluminum housing for cracks, dents, or deformation, and verify the mode selection knob locks cleanly into both SRL and winch positions.

Lock test. With the cable unloaded, pull a length of cable out by hand and let it retract slowly. Then pull approximately 2 feet of cable out with a quick tug. In SRL mode, the centrifugal brake must lock the cable. If the cable does not lock, remove the device from service.

Retraction test. Pull out approximately 4 feet of cable. Release the cable and verify it retracts smoothly into the housing under spring tension. If retraction is uneven, slow, or fails to fully retract, remove the device from service.

Snaphook and stress indicator. Inspect the locking swivel snaphook gate, locking sleeve, and swivel function. Verify the stress indicator window on the snaphook is clear (not deployed). A deployed stress indicator indicates that the device has experienced an arrest event or impact load and must be returned for factory inspection.

Remove from Service Triggers

Remove the device from service and return for factory inspection if any of the following occur: the device arrests a fall, the stress indicator deploys, the cable shows cuts, kinks, broken strands, or significant abrasion, the locking mechanism malfunctions in either mode, the cable does not retract, the cast aluminum housing is cracked or deformed, or the device has not had a documented inspection in the past 12 months. Annual factory inspection and recertification is required per the user manual.

Calculating Fall Clearance

Fall clearance below the work surface must accommodate the device's maximum arrest distance, harness stretch, the worker's standing height, and a safety margin. The RAG503W-US has a measured maximum arrest distance of less than or equal to 24 in (610 mm) within the ANSI Z359.14 Class A 130 to 310 lb rated capacity range, and less than or equal to 54 in (1,372 mm) in the 310 to 350 lb tested capacity range.

Required clearance below the work surface (in the 130 to 310 lb range): 24 in maximum arrest distance, plus typical harness stretch and dorsal D-ring shift of approximately 12 in, plus the worker's standing height (often estimated at 6 ft for a 6 ft worker), plus a 2 ft (24 in) safety margin. A typical planning value falls within the 11-12 ft total clearance range below the anchor point for an overhead anchor configuration. Use the Fall Protection Game Plan below to run the calculation against the specific anchor geometry on your jobsite.

In the 310 to 350 lb tested range, add the additional 30 in (54 in arrest distance versus 24 in) to the planning number above. Verify the anchor point sits high enough above the work surface to clear the bottom of the confined space plus the safety margin.

Single user. Stay within the 130 to 310 lb ANSI Class A range whenever possible. Combined weight includes the worker, clothing, tools, and all attached equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the RAG503W-US different from a standard cable SRL like the RPG?
Three functions in one housing. A standard cable SRL such as the Frontline RPG provides fall arrest only. The RAG503W-US adds a mechanical retrieval winch (30:1 mechanical advantage) and controlled lowering on top of SRL fall arrest. One device handles entry fall protection, post-incident retrieval, and routine assisted lowering or lifting without a hardware swap mid-rescue. ANSI Z359.14 Class A certified for the 130 to 310 lb capacity range.
How do I switch between SRL mode and winch mode?
Rotate the rubber-coated mode selection knob. For SRL fall arrest mode, pull the knob outward and rotate counterclockwise one quarter turn (the knob springs outward). For winch retrieval mode, push the knob inward and rotate clockwise one quarter turn. Never change modes while a worker is loaded on the cable. Switch only with the cable unloaded and the handle controlled.
What is the stress indicator on the snaphook?
An impact-deployed visual indicator built into the locking swivel snaphook. If the device arrests a fall or sees an impact load, the stress indicator deploys (becomes visible) on the snaphook body. A deployed stress indicator means the device must be removed from service and returned for factory inspection. Check the indicator at every pre-use inspection. If it is deployed, do not use the device.
Can I use the RAG503W-US with non-Frontline tripods or quadpods?
The mounting bracket is designed for the Frontline Patriot family (TAN07-US tripod, QAN75-US quadpod, future DAN75 davit) and is fully cross-compatible with Frontline MEGApod tripods (TAN07, TAN10). Third-party tripod and davit compatibility depends on the leg or boom geometry and the overhead anchor rating. Contact Fall Protection Distributors before pairing with a non-Frontline anchor so we can confirm fit and verify the anchor meets ANSI Z359.4 and OSHA 1910 anchorage requirements.
What is the rated capacity range and what changes outside it?
The ANSI Z359.14 Class A rated capacity range is 130 to 310 lb (combined weight of worker, clothing, tools, and equipment). Within that range the maximum arrest distance is less than or equal to 24 inches (610 mm) and average arresting force stays below 1,350 lb (6 kN). The device has been tested up to 350 lb; in the 310 to 350 lb range the maximum arrest distance increases to less than or equal to 54 inches (1,372 mm). Plan fall clearance accordingly.
Is the RAG503W-US a material handling device?
No. The RAG503W-US is a personal fall arrest, retrieval, and lowering device for use with a single worker. It is not a general-purpose material hoist. Do not use it for lifting tools, equipment, or loads independent of a connected worker. For material lowering and lifting in a confined space, use a dedicated personnel-rated winch such as the Frontline RUW60 or contact us for the correct material handling solution.
How often does the device need factory recertification?
Annual factory inspection and recertification is required per the user manual. The device must also be removed from service for factory inspection any time it arrests a fall, the stress indicator deploys, the cable shows damage, the locking mechanism malfunctions, the cable does not retract, or it has not been inspected in the past 12 months. Pre-use inspection by the user is required before every use.
Is the RAG503W-US Made in USA?
Yes. The RAG503W-US is manufactured in the United States and listed on the Frontline Patriot Buy American Act compliance certificate. It qualifies for federal Build America, Buy America (BABA) sourcing requirements when paired with the rest of the Patriot platform (TAN07-US, QAN75-US, future DAN75).
